How’s the inventory updated during a Live stream

In Shopify, the out-of-stock management and product allocation during a flash sale or any high-demand event follow a specific flow:

Cart: When a shopper adds an item to their cart, the product isn't reserved. This means that even if a shopper has the item in their cart, another shopper could purchase it before them.

Checkout: The inventory is still not reserved during the initial stages of checkout (e.g., entering shipping information). Multiple shoppers can still proceed to this stage with the same item.

Payment: Shopify allocates the product only during the payment process. When a shopper completes the payment, Shopify deducts the inventory. If the inventory is insufficient by the time the payment is processed, the order will fail for the second shopper who attempts to purchase the product.

So in your scenario, if there's only one unit available and two shoppers try to buy it simultaneously, the product will be allocated to the shopper whose payment is processed first.

The second shopper will receive an out-of-stock notification once they attempt to finalize their purchase.
